Carlos Checa refuses to dwell on his dramatic exit from race one as he responds by claiming a fairly easy victory in race two at Phillip Island.
Carlos Checa comes away from the opening round of his World Superbike Championship defence at Phillip Island celebrating a 21st career win, but also nursing some bruises after a spectacular crash in race one.
Coming into race day keen to give his title challenge the best possible start, Checa looked every inch the rider that dominated in 2011 as he quickly worked his way to the front of the field in race one....more

ALTHEA RACING AND CHECA QUALIFY THIRD FOR THE FIRST SBK RACES OF THE SEASON, TOMORROW AT PHILLIP ISLAND
Phillip Island (Australia), Saturday 25th February 2012: a tragic start to the 2012 World Superbike championship when a serious accident occurred during the Australian championship’s Superstock 600 race this afternoon at Phillip Island, proving fatal for young rider Oscar McIntyre, from Queensland, Australia. Team Althea Racing sends its condolences to the family and friends of Oscar McIntyre. Consequently, the Superpole sessions were cancelled and the Superbike riders grid positions were decided according to the combined qualifying times. Team Althea Racing and its riders Carlos Checa and Davide Giugliano will thus line up in third and fourteenth position respectively on tomorrow’s race grid.
Checa and Giugliano, already fourth and third respectively in yesterday’s first qualifying session, were out on track this morning, determined to make further improvement. On a cooler track with respect to yesterday afternoon, nearly all of the riders were able to improve on their times, Checa included. Mid-session the 2011 champion recorded a 1m31.6 that positioned him second behind Sykes on the Kawasaki. Thanks to that time, Carlos qualified in third position. Unfortunately Giugliano was unable to improve on his best time set in first qualifying but the work done yesterday placed him in fourteenth position at the end of qualifying, enough to enter the Superpole, subsequently cancelled.
In the final practice of the early afternoon, both Althea men worked with their technicians to make final modifications ahead of tomorrow’s races. Checa closed the session in second place, Giugliano twelfth....more

Defending champ Carlos Checa concentrated on race set-up while rookie Althea Racing teammate Davide Giugliano flashed big potential on Friday.
Team Althea Racing took part in the opening sessions of the 2012 World Superbike Championship today at the Australian track of Phillip Island with some very encouraging results -- young Althea rider Davide Giugliano closed first qualifying in third position, followed by Carlos Checa in fourth.
Checa, current SBK world champion, got straight to work in the first practice session of the morning, projecting himself into first place after only ten minutes. In very warm conditions (air temperature 26˚C, track 41˚C), Carlos continued to improve throughout the 45-minute sessions, closing with a best time of 1m31.9. He was the only rider to lap in under 1m32. His teammate Giugliano began to make progress in the second part of the session, working hard to increase feeling with his Ducati 1198 and improving on his times to close the practice in sixteenth position with a best time of 1m33.1....more

World Superbike champion Carlos Checa is nervously waiting to see how an extra weight penalty will affect his Ducati in this year's series which gets underway at Phillip Island on Friday.
Because of the dominance of the Ducatis last year, the bikes will be forced to carry an extra six kilograms in a bid to bring parity to the championship.
Checa is concerned that the handicap will affect his outright speed and endurance...more

Carlos Checa continued his superb form in the opening session of Phillip Island official testing that marks the countdown towards Sunday's opening round in Australia. The Althea Racing man headed the timesheets at the end of the morning session, ending up with a time of 1 minute 31.947 seconds after 38 laps. Checa's time was just one tenth of a second away from the time he obtained here last week during private testing.
Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) was right behind Checa, the Italian going second quickest with a time of 1'32.136, while Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike), who tested privately here in January, was third in 1'32.381. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was fifth in the standings behind Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad), who lost control of his S 1000 RR machine coming out of the final curve and crashed hard in the run-off area. Haslam was unable to stand up immediately and was then taken to hospital on the Island, where a small bone fracture in his right heel was diagnosed.
Today's second session will finish at 1730 local time.

Carlos Checa took advantage of the hotter conditions at Phillip Island on Tuesday to seize the initiative during the second day of the private World Superbike test in Australia. The Althea Ducati rider took nearly a second off his time to get down to something approaching race pace, after finding a slightly different front-end setup for his 1198R. Kawasaki's Tom Sykes continued to impress, ending the second day of testing just a tenth off the pace of Checa, and another tenth ahead of Aprilia's Max Biaggi, while Eugene Laverty was two tenths slower than his Aprilia teammate....more

Carlos Checa fastest at Phillip Island pre-season test. Surprise! Er, not really
Yes, we are going to say it: "Sykes with a lot to smile about." Well, it is true.
Carlos Checa put his 'ancient' Althea Ducati in 'pole' position at the end of day two of the three day Phillip Island test, relegating yesterday's fastest rider, Tom Sykes to second sport on his Factory Kawasaki.
As we reported yesterday, reigning World superbike champion Checa has previous good form at the Australian circuit, recording the fastest times here last year and winning the opening races of the 2011 season. It's hard to see anyone dislodging him this time, though it is heartening to see that both Kawasakis are looking consistent – as are the Aprilias of Max Biaggi and new Aprilia rider Eugene Laverty...more

While Ducati are making do without Valentino Rossi, participating in the Monza Rally Show this weekend, and Nicky Hayden, recovering from his recent wrist surgery, the Italian factory has WSBK Champion Carlos Checa and regular test rider Franco Battaini in action on the GPZero. This is the first Desmosedici equipped with an twin-spar aluminum frame, and it will serve as the basis for next year's GP12.
Also making a debut was Colin Edwards on the Suter-BMW CRT for the first time. The Texan returns to the track to begin developing the NGM Forward Racing prototype for the MotoGP class next season, and also present is Colombian rider Yonny Hernandez aboard the BQR Team’s Kawasaki powered FTR machine.
Present for testing in the Moto2 category are teams Mobile NGM Forward Racing with team riders Alex de Angelis and Yuki Takahashi, Marc VDS Racing Team with riders Scott Redding (whose crash can be seen HERE) and Mika Kallio, the Aspar Team with Nico Terol and Toni Elías, Pons Racing with Pol Espargaró and Esteve Rabat, Tech 3 with Bradley Smith and Xavier Simeon and the Gresini Team with British rider Gino Rea.
Taking about his work on the Aspar machine was former Moto2 world champion, Toni Elias, who covered an impressive 104 laps on the day, the quickest a 1'44"21: "Considering how little time I've had with this new bike, it's a good result - the Spaniard said - After a year in MotoGP, I have to change my riding style again to adapt to this bike. The first impression was very good, though, and we are working in the right direction."
Slightly slower, with a best lap of 1'44"90, was his teammate and 125cc champion Nico Terol: "Slowly but surely I'm starting to understand my new bike - Terol revealed - the most important thing is to cover a lot of kilometers, but we have also modified the chassis slightly to get more traction, and we also tried a bigger fairing."
Sharing the track with the GP racers was BMW factory Superbike riders Marco Melandri and Leon Haslam. No official lap times are available, since it is a private test, but we will provide updates as soon as the come in.
