Despite the loss of the factory Yamaha team, the World Superbike series is still in relatively good health, considering the financial crisis. Though the days of 30+ rider grids are gone, grid size has stabilized at around the 22 rider mark, 1 up from last year, while there are still 6 manufacturers present, Aprilia, BMW, Ducati and Kawasaki in an official capacity, Honda unofficially via Ten Kate, and Suzuki absent, with Crescent working with Yoshimura on their own bikes.
The field has seen some changes, though most of the title favorites are staying with the teams they were with in 2011. Carlos Checa remains with Althea Ducati, though the effort expands to include 2011 Superstock champ Davide Giugliano, while Max Biaggi is in the second year of his 2-year contract with Aprilia, and Johnny Rea is staying with the Ten Kate Honda squad....more

I'm going to be appearing at the San Francisco Dainese store again in February and I anticipate still more questions about photography in addition to those about what it's like to work in the MotoGP paddock, so I thought I'd post something photography-related here for those of you who enjoy taking pictures at the races.
The above image of Marco Simoncelli at Indy is one of my personal favorites from 2011, and I thought it would be useful when talking about what a photographer can do in the darkroom, whether that's one that smells of chemicals or the digital version. While some photographers still lament the loss of film as a medium for various and often quite legitimate reasons, I am grateful for the opportunities to start with one image and end up with another via digital tools more powerful than those in the wet darkroom. This image is a good example of how digital tools turned one image into something much different, and ultimately a photograph that I place among my best of the season.
So here's a rare opportunity to see some of my unedited photographs, straight out of the camera. The series shown below begins as Simoncelli has come into the pits at Indy and dismounted. As he walks back into the box, his chief mechanic, Aligi Deganello, gives him a supportive fist, which at first I thought was my photograph. As I saw that gesture through the lens I got a little jolt of excitement that I'd just caught a nice moment....more

Really interesting article on the process to make a drawing like the one shown, which began as a photo from the immensly talented Scott Jones and will end as a tribute piece that will raise money for Riders For Health.

The weather in Jerez for the private test for a number of Moto2, MotoGP and WSBK teams looks like more than making up for the washed out test at Valencia last week, with the first day of testing taking place under blue skies and warm temperatures, conditions which look set to stay all week. The day saw a variety of bikes taking to the track, with Ducati's test team, a handful of top Moto2 teams, and another sprinkling of MotoGP CRT machines running alongside the BMW World Superbike squad.
As it is a private test, no official times were released, but a raft of unofficial times were made available and assembled by the excellent Spanish site MotoWorld.es. Fastest man of the day - very unofficially - was Carlo Checa, the 2011 World Superbike champion gathering data with the "GPZero" version of the Desmosedici MotoGP bike, the aluminium-framed version of the GP12 with identical dimensions to the bike with the carbon fiber subframe and the engine as a stressed member. Unsurprisingly, Checa was 1.8 seconds faster than the Moto2 machines, Scott Redding having been quickest on the Marc VDS Racing Kalex, despite a morning crash which trashed his bike.....More

With the gift-giving season at hand, it is time to start thinking about what to give that motorcycle-racing mad friend/partner/child of yours. If you don't have the money for Freddie Spencer's NS500, then the MotoMatters.com 2012 Motorcycle Racing Calendar is the next best thing for the diehard race fan. Packed with some of Scott Jones' most beautiful images from this year, together with a full listing of MotoGP and World Superbike races for the 2012 season, the calendar is both a thing of beauty and a useful tool for any motorcycle racing fan intending to follow their favorite international motorcycle racing series.
The calendar has a double-page spread for each month, with one of Scott Jones' fantastic photos above a month grid containing birthdays for most of the leading riders in the MotoGP, World Superbike, Moto2, World Supersport and 125cc classes. To help race fans plan their weekends, every MotoGP and World Superbike round is highlighted on the month grid for easy reference. Planning your race trip, viewing party or personal watching schedule has never been easier. As an added bonus, the center pages feature a double-page close up of the 2011 MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner.
This year's calendar is large (12" x 9.25", or 30.5cm x 23.5cm), and features an additional high gloss finish to make Scott Jones' pictures shine. The calendar is to be produced in a limited run, with no more to be produced once the calendar sells out. Calendars are priced at $24.95 US plus shipping and handling, though MotoMatters.com subscribers receive a massive discount of over 50%, and can order the calendar for just $10.95 plus shipping and handling. The discount is applied automatically if you order a calendar while logged in as a subscriber.

In August of last year I posted a desktop wallpaper on my website of the above image with a bit of information about the championship trophy's creator, GARCIAROJALS Studio in Barcelona. I'd seen the trophy up close for the first time while it was on display in the lobby of the mobile Dorna HQ building that travels to the European rounds. I was very impressed by the workmanship and design. It's quite a beaufitul bit of art, and I was pleased to share the above photo with others who shared that opinion....Full story:http://motomatters.com/blog/2011/11/20/photographer_s_blog_the_motogp_champions.html
