Ducati Team rider Andrea Dovizioso turned in an emotional performance during qualifying at Mugello.
Ducati Team rider Andrea Dovizioso turned in an emotional performance during qualifying at Mugello, the Italian manufacturer’s home track, posting an inspired final lap in the Q2 session that put him on the front row for tomorrow’s TIM Italian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, grip problems limited teammate Nicky Hayden to eighth-best, and the American will start from row three.
Making the Italian’s accomplishment even sweeter was the fact that following a hard fall yesterday, he hadn’t been sure if he’d be able to ride, due to a sore neck. However, thanks in part to intensive physiotherapy, he managed to record the third-best time, achieving his second front-row qualifying performance in a row.
The Grand Prix of Italy from Mugello will air LIVE on SPEED on Sunday, June 2nd in a two-hour programming block that starts at 7:00am ET. #MotoGPonSPEED

Mugello is arguably MotoGP's crowning glory. The location is stunning, in the verdant hills of Tuscany, a few miles north of Florence, one of the most beautiful ancient cities in the world. The track itself is gorgeous, and beautifully laid out, rolling round the valley in which the circuit is set. It is one of the few tracks left at which a MotoGP bike can fully stretch its legs, even a 260+ horsepower fire-breathing 1000cc Honda RC213V. At the end of the front straight, as riders drift right then left for the slight kink of the pit lane exit just before the track drops off for the spectacular first corner at San Donato, the bikes approach the magical barrier of 350 km/h. An obstacle that has not yet been cleared, but one which must surely fall in the near future. A lap of the circuit passes in under 1'48, an average of 175 km/h, or nearly 110 mph. It is verily a temple of speed.

Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will compete in his third consecutive MotoGP race at Mugello this weekend.
Pirro is making his second wildcard appearance of the season on the Desmosedici GP13 'lab bike' in the wake of his debut at Jerez.
He also stood in for Ignite Pramac Racing's Ben Spies at Le Mans, finishing eight in the wet conditions at the French track on the standard GP13.
Pirro said: “First of all, I'm very happy to be making my second wildcard ride, and I'd like to thank Ducati for this opportunity.

Michele Pirro will get his second MotoGP wildcard outing on Ducati's development bike this weekend at Mugello.
The factory rider made the first of three such outings at Jerez in early May, where he finished 11th overall.
He also stood in for the injured Ben Spies in Ducati's satellite Pramac squad at Le Mans, finishing just behind reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo in eighth.
Pirro, whose final wildcard appearance will come at Misano in September, said he hoped to move closer to the sharp end of the field even if gathering data remains his priority.
"First of all, I'm very happy to be making my second wildcard ride, and I'd like to thank Ducati for this opportunity," Pirro said...(more HERE)

The Ducati test is over at Mugello, with better weather today than yesterday, Andrea Iannone turned 51 laps and Michele Pirro 65. Worth noting was Iannone's best time of 1.48:3, better than the recent qualifying time of Valentino Rossi, a 1.48.502, which placed Rossi 10th on the grid. Per GPOne.com, Iannone feels that while not official, his place on the team for 2013 is secure.

The 2012 MotoGP of Italy was the scene of Valentino Rossi's most personal and direct dedication to his fans who came in their tens of thousands.
Opening the AGV helmet case on the Saturday morning he presented a message of "Restiamo Uniti" or "Let's stick together". In typical stye it had all the humour and more than enough sub-plots to get the rumour mill churning. Some people interpreted it as a direct reference to his state of mind within the Ducati team; others may know it as a common catchphrase amongst Italian family television courtesy of Gianni Morani who took pride of place on the lid. It quite probably meant both but by no means was it lost on the army of fans who invaded the asphalt on Sunday afternoon as the riders brought their machines back to the pits on the back of a hard fought race.
Valentino was left with plenty to do, starting in tenth position but despite lack of front-end feel he dragged himself and Cal Crutchlow up into the pack ahead of himself and ultimately grabbed fifth as he watched the final podium place being duked out by Andrea Dovizioso and Stefan Bradl just ahead.

Tribuna. The literal translation is “grandstand” but the word seems to have evolved from Roman times when a Tribunal was a raised platform for addressing the troops or administering justice. Find yourself in the middle of Tribuna Mugello (or any other jam packed Ducati grandstand) and you’ll see just how short that string is back to Roman times.
It starts the first time the Ducati Corse riders pass on the track the first session of the weekend and the Ducati passion crescendo rises as the race day gets closer. On Sunday it all steps up a notch when the Desmodromiclub of Roma steps in to oversee the over the top display of Ducati love the tribuna Mugello is so famous for, the card stunt. It’s something different every time, but it’s always a grand gesture, a literal embrace from thousands of Ducati fans to their riders and the world.
It all started at Mugello but now they take place at many of the races and the grandstand at the IndyGP is actually called the Project Mugello grandstand, named that because at Indy we wanted to do a card stunt that would make the Italians proud. We got a hurricane instead....

Mugello testing: GP12 News
The photo above is from GPone
Based on the few pictures that circulate online, most of which on Gpone.com, and from the meager statements of Valentino Rossi at the end of testing, I was able to determine something about the changes implemented on the Desmosedici GP12 at Mugello.
In my article from May 25th, I predicted a new design for the fuel tank to look for a better balance of the bike’s center of mass, because it was not acceptable to move the pilot back and forth, lengthening or shortening the fake tank cover, to move the weights.

Mugello test day concludes three busy weeks for Ducati Team
The post-race MotoGP test that concluded three intense weeks of racing and testing was blessed with a beautiful, sunny day that was warm but breezy.
Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden worked together with their respective teams and the Ducati engineers on a number of updates to the chassis, in an effort to balance the weight distribution; to the engine, to improve rideability; and to the electronics.
Valentino Rossi suffered a fall at the Correntaio that was due to a small problem with the ECU. Although he suffered no physical harm, the decision was made to finish his test early, before 4:00 p.m.

Valentino Rossi took a small measure of revenge as soon as he entered the Ducati hospitality area to meet the press. "How did Barbera do today? I didn't see him, was he right behind me until the end?" The joking out of the way, Rossi was genuinely content with his performance at Mugello. "It was my best race of the season. We made a change to the front end during the warm up, and it gave me a perfect feeling in the right hand corners. I was able to push the way I like."

Great tracks produce great racing, even in the MotoGP class, where the combination of fuel limits, extremely advanced electronics and stiff Bridgestone tires mean that the way to win races is by being absolutely inch-perfect on every lap. And Mugello is a great track, there is no doubt of that, despite the fact that the usual Mugello atmosphere had been muted by a combination of a dismal Italian economy and sky-high ticket prices at the circuit, the only way for the circuit to recoup some of the sanctioning fee it must pay Dorna to run the race. The hillsides were very sparsely populated, perhaps in part a result of the total Spanish domination of qualifying, putting three Spaniards on the front row in MotoGP, and another two on the Moto3 and Moto2 poles as well.
