I’m not a bike guy, let’s put it out there, so this will most probably be one of the worst bike pieces you’ll ever read, especially in technical terms. To me, most bikes look the same; it’s either a cruiser, an off-road bike, a sports bike, or a scooter. Getting deeper into this world was always a challenge, I never figured out how people knew the difference between a Kawasaki ZX-10R and a ZX-6R without looking at the emblems. If I see a purpose-built drag bike or a custom show chopper, I’ll have no idea what I am looking at, just that it has two wheels and it’s loud.

He's right, that's a good looking Diavel...

The Ducati Diavel is an interesting creature. Part Superbike and part Cruiser with a little Alien thrown in for futuristic aesthetic. We worked on this project when it first came out and actually built a concept bike based on a 1098 Motor and chassis prior to the Diavel’s release. Our bike never saw the light of day, but some of our ideas did. We developed a line of contrast cut accessories for the bike and finally got a chance to use the stuff on this customer build. The bike features a load of custom bolt on parts along with some custom paint and a little extra flair. We’ve retained all the stock geometry and performance while decreasing the weight. We’d like to go further with a Diavel and reshape the body around the stellar chassis and motor. Anyone up for a full on Diavel Build?

The Diavel is a unique motorcycle. It is difficult to know what the hell (pun intended) Ducati wanted to accomplish with it. The Diavel project began under the leadership of Ducati’s previous design chief, Pierre Terblanche, who commissioned Glynn Kerr, freelance designer and design columnist for Motorcycle Consumer News, to produce the initial concept sketches.

The claws aren’t the only thing come out in the film The Wolverine, debuting in theaters today. One of the main stars of the film, besides Hugh Jackman super-attenuated arms, is the Ducati Diavel Cromo. The Diavel, first introduced in 2012, is a departure from traditional Ducati superbikes with its low-slung stance and more upright riding position and is prominently featured in the new film.

What’s New
EVERYTHING. Ok, so not everything. But the Diavel Strada is a “new” bike for 2013, coming in the form of a touring oriented adaptation of the launched-in-2011 Ducati Diavel. The Diavel Strada get both a windscreen and side bags, while the bars, seat, and pillion seat have all been adapted for the bike’s new purpose. The bars are now swept up and come in at 0.6 inches higher and 2.36 inches back towards the rider. The seat received some additional foam padding and the pillion seat got a back rest, new grab rails, and slightly adjusted foot pegs. Electronically, the Diavel Strada got fancy heated grips and auxiliary power outlets. All of these additions and the Diavel Strada comes in at just 13 pounds heavier than the Diavel.
The Ride
While I’d hoped to take this “touring” version on an official tour of some sort, my schedule didn’t allow me to get away for more than a day so the most I was able to do was 2, 200-250 round trip days around Southern California. The first, down to Julian to the Julian Pie Company (because I love pie more than most things) and the second to see friends playing a certain music festival in Ventura this past weekend (which I’ll leave unnamed because people my age aren’t supposed to like that sort of thing).

CW's cruiser comparison featuring the Ducati Diavel Dark vs. Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom.
All roads lead to Rome, or so the saying goes. Once literal (all roads in the ancient Empire actually did lead to Rome), the expression in popular culture reminds us that different paths can lead to a common goal. Just like the new Ducati Diavel Dark and Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom. Two iconic Italian manufacturers, two unique power cruisers, one definitive result: Badassery.
Despite the obvious apple-to-orange aesthetics, these two muscle bikes share more than bravado and Italian birthrights. Each offers a sophisticated ride-by-wire injection system with three ignition mapping modes, traction control and world-class Brembo brakes with ABS. And yes, they both use sizable Twins for propulsion, though each mill is situated in a distinctive manner.

When Ducati unveiled the Diavel in 2011, the model was essentially an assault weapon with one target in its crosshairs - the power-cruiser market. This was new territory for the Bologna-based manufacturer, and the Diavel quickly gained recognition, bringing Ducati's underlying image of performance to a new audience.
The model's assault apparently worked, Ducati claiming that the Diavel, which is local Borgo Panigale dialect for "devil," pronounced dee-ah-vel, is now one of the company's most desired models.
Not too worried about changing the Diavel's design, the model returned as a carryover in 2012, though with addition of special editions, such as the Cromo and AMG (before the Audi takeover).

The Diavel vs VMAX is certainly a bout for the ages between the brute finesse of the Ducati and the cudgeling strength of the YamaStar.
The VMAX postures like a dominant silverback gorilla but the Diavel refuses to be intimidated by the size and power of its opponent. In the annals of imaginary dream fights this matchup is akin to a young Mike Tyson in the ring with an equally youthful Muhammad Ali, or a movie where the Terminator is programmed to kill James Bond. While not exactly a David vs Goliath scenario, the Diavel vs VMAX is certainly a bout for the ages between the brute finesse of the Ducati and the cudgeling strength of the YamaStar.

Talk about parting traffic. Wind the throttle open to release Armageddon, a rocking, rolling, mad, bad soundtrack that's part sex, pure muscle and sends cars diving for the verge in fright. Yet Diavel divided Ducati fans when it was first announced. A fat-tyred cruiser from a brand best known for sweet-handling sports bikes? Not since Porsche revealed an SUV have performance-focused petrolheads expressed such outrage.

Chris Pine is in the process of rebooting his second high-profile character for Paramount Pictures, and 2013 is most likely the year he becomes a household name. We’ll see him reprise the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek 2‘ in May, while next winter brings us Pine take on Jack Ryan in, well, ‘ Jack Ryan.’ If you were wondering what the latter character will look like, today’s your lucky day, as the first image of Pine-as-Ryan has been revealed.
As you can see from said image (via ComingSoon.net), production has officially begun on ‘Jack Ryan,’ which will tell the origin story of the fictional CIA operative. Not a whole lot to take away from this picture, other than shooting is taking place in Manhattan (South Street Seaport, it appears) and Jack has expensive taste in motorcycles – that’s a Ducati, baby....
