Volkswagen is pushing ahead with plans to boost the performance of its two-seat XL1 with a highly strung two-cylinder gas engine sourced from the Ducati 1199 Panigale superbike, high-ranking insiders at the German car maker have confirmed.

Speaking on the sidelines of the unveiling of the new e-Golf in Wolfsburg, Germany this week, Volkswagen's head of R & D Hans-Jakob Neusser revealed development of the Ducati-engined XL1 is well underway. “Yes, we are working on it internally. It is a special project,” he told Autoweek.

Volkswagen Group Night Paris Auto Show 2012 | VWVortex | Ductalk Ducati News | Scoop.it
The night before the first press day, Volkswagen holds its Volkswagen Group Night event where they offer a preview to journalists away from the auto show some of what they plan to show at the auto show.

Volkswagen just finished up their Group Night at the Paris Auto Show 2012 and rolled out a preview of some of the things we’ll see at the Auto Show over the next couple days.

Of interest, this was the first time Ducati was featured in the Volkswagen Group Night activities as part of the overall Volkswagen Group. Ducati’s CEO Gabriele Del Torchio rolled on to the stage with Ducati’s new updated Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak.

Ductalk Completely Unconfirmed Gossip: gp-inside.com | Ducati was purchased by VW!

Ductalk Completely Unconfirmed Gossip: gp-inside.com | Ducati was purchased by VW! | Ductalk Ducati News | Scoop.it

(translated from French)

While several names, including BMW, Mahindra, Hero Motocorp ... had been raised for the eventual redemption of Borgo Panigale, it seems (and we stress the conditional), whether that VW is finally the happy owner .

This information comes directly from a staff member of Ducati, who prefers, however (and will be readily understood) remain anonymous.

He said the visit in Borgo Panigale was held last week, and the funds would be already happening. Still according to him, an official statement should be published in the coming hours.

As stated above, this information is to be taken with the distance it must as it has not been officially confirmed by Ducati. Stay tuned!

Ductalk Editors "just our opinion" note - This is a completely unconfirmed story kicking around on Twitter and the 'net today. VW has been interested in Ducati in the past so this is a lot less far fetched than say, the Hero speculation. We do just love this old photo though, don't you?
