"I am very sorry.Carlos is a great guy and a fair sportsman.” says Melandri...
MARCO MELANDRI has apologised to Carlos Checa after colliding with the reigning champion and forcing him out of the second race at Misano.
Both the factory BMW and Althea Ducati riders were charging through the pack after starting down the grid, following lowly Superpole performances, when the Italian attempted a pass and knocked Checa down on lap four.
Whereas the Spaniard was unable to return to the track, Melandri stayed upright to continue and eventually finish the race in fourth position.
"On lap 4 I was behind Carlos. I tried to pass him in turn four where I felt strong in braking," explained Melandri. "We were side by side, so I expected him to see me, but when we started to flick into the corner he seemed not to realise that I was next to him as he touched my leg with his shoulder and he lost the front.
