Swing a leg over the 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale and you feel instantly like a Grand Prix racer.
Ducati has aced the test of this size sport motorcycle. The 899 Panigale marries the responsive light handling of the smaller bikes with performance that approaches that of liter-class bikes, but without the intimidating force of its 1198cc big brother or other liter and larger performance monsters.
Between the 899 Panigale rider's legs is one of the best mills yet from the Italian maker of L-shaped twin engines. It has Ducati's trademark springless valve actuation, with four valves per cylinder in the 898cc liquid-cooled motor. It pumps 148 horsepower with gobs of thrilling pulling punch.

Ducati's scaled-down supersport hits the spot in our test ride
“It’s a bit showy.” That was the verdict of a friend as I roared up on Ducati’s 899 Panigale.
“Yes,” I agreed. “Great isn’t it?”
The bike does look fantastic. The pearl white bodywork – the manufacturer describes it as “silk” – contrasted by the bright red, 10-spoke alloy wheels.
And it sounds incredible – a deep, throaty rumble from the Superquadro V-twin motor.

We pit it against the class leading Suzuki GSX-R750 and the hugely capable Triumph Daytona 675R to see if it's got what it takes to set a new world order.

The 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale doesn’t fit into established motorcycle categories. It’s not eligible for any major international race series. It’s not priced to steal sales from any rivals. Instead, it’s been specifically created to make the Panigale DNA more accessible. We just finished riding the bike on Italy’s Imola Circuit in the pouring rain and this is the first review you’ll see anywhere online.
