Asphalt & Rubber broke the news about the upcoming Ducati 1199 Panigale R Superleggera. An ultra-exclusive limited edition model of the Panigale R superbike, our sources spoke of jaw-dropping figures: 220hp at the crank, and 40 lbs shed from what was already Ducati’s lightest superbike ever.
With only 500 models to be produced, this halo bike from Bologna will be available only to the upper-echelon of Ducati customers, with the Italian brand setting up an online ordering form for the chosen Ducatisti.

Ducati has gone to great lengths so that you won’t know this, but in about a month’s time, the Bologna Brand will debut perhaps the most ostentatious machine ever to come from the Borgo Panigale factory, the Ducati 1199 Panigale R Superleggera. An ultra-exclusive version of the Ducati 1199 Panigale R, the Superleggera edition is exactly what its Italian name suggests, a super-light version of the Panigale R.
With the Panigale R already the lightest sport bike to ever come from Ducati, the Panigale R Superleggera goes even further, employing titanium, carbon fiber, and magnesium throughout the machine to drop its curb weight by an additional 40 lbs. Ducati isn’t stopping there though.

CW went to Laguna Seca and tested two of the hottest production sportbikes: 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale R and the BMW HP4.
Oh, the lifestyle of the financially affluent motorhead, the one-percenter with a passion for the finest in all things performance-related. While it’s a trend to demonize the wealthy, I say smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em, especially if that involves, say, dusting off the Bugatti with some fliers around the new Circuit of The Americas.
While most of us will never have an experience even remotely approaching that, we motorcyclists are a lucky bunch because bike manufacturers deliver amazing performance to the people. The BMW HP4 and Ducati 1199 Panigale R, the two hottest production sportbikes, are prime examples of this, so off we went to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a midweek day of testing....

Sure, it's the fastest way to lap a race track that you can buy from a showroom, but how's the Ducati 1199 Panigale R perform in the real world? More importantly, how's it look on video?

WSBK News. Carlos Checa says he is committed to finding the improvements the new Ducati 1199 Panigale needs to get on terms with its rivals following a tough start to its racing life.
Carlos Checa insists he remains motivated to unlock the full potential of the new Ducati 1199 Panigale, despite a difficult start to its racing tenure during the 2013 World Superbike Championship.
As with its predecessors, the much vaunted Panigale spent a year in development ahead of its racing debut the following season, but while the 999 and 1098 were race winners out of the box, the 1199 has struggled to break out of the mid-field during the opening five rounds.

SuperbikePlanet reunited this year with Ducati's latest 1199 Panigale, the official "R" version, during an event held at the model's world-press introduction at the Circuit Of The Americas in Austin, Texas. The COTA invitation was our true chance to ride the successor to the kitted 1199S we only sampled last year, and what we experienced in mid-March was nothing short of spectacular: Ducati's latest R and America's latest F1 circuit are a combination almost beyond belief.

The word refined is rarely associated with brutally powerful motorcycles, but the descriptor does suit the 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale R, a still-menacing yet more polished version of the 1199 model that preceded it. The Panigale R has a starting price of just under $30,000.
The alterations begin with the 1,198 cc L-twin powerplant. The engine’s new titanium connecting rods and lightweight flywheel produce more responsive revs and a higher ceiling of 12,000 rpm. Complementing the higher redline is a larger rear sprocket, which enables lower final-drive gearing for quicker acceleration. The engine’s output remains at 195 hp and 98 ft lbs of torque, but the middle range is more robust, which results in a mighty high-end wallop all the way to the rev limiter.

While he hadn't yet been named CEO when this photo was taken, Claudio Domenicali has long been a force of nature inside Ducati. From the days when Ducati Corse was just formed to his later progression into production, Domenicali's hands are all over nearly every aspect of Ducati as a company. His love for racing is well known.
My takeaway? You have to dog food your own product.

"If you're a car person and think you can't comprehend why an average Joe would put this kind of money into a motorcycle, consider the possibility of purchasing a street-legal F1 car for double the price of a Porsche 911."
Surviving long-term motorcycle riding requires a healthy dose of fear and the heightened awareness that accompanies it. Nothing suffers fools quite as ruthlessly as two-wheeled transport, an axiom that has been relentlessly reinforced by YouTube. The exposure of riding is bound to catch up with thrill-seekers hungry for speed, knee dragging, and all the potential disaster that comes with tapping into a sportbike's vast reserves of performance....
