For this edition of Memorable Motorcycles Frank Melling presents the 450 Ducati Scrambler - a bike ahead of its time but full of quirks.

If ever a bike needed to be put into context it is the Ducati 450 scrambler – and the key to understanding this rather lovely motorcycle is to appreciate just how big motocross was in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today, if you ask a MotoGP fan who the current World Motocross Champion is, you would be lucky to get any answer – let alone an accurate one.

Café 31 was born in the history of the Italian brand, and then mated with the most state of the art components available to produce a machine as capable on the track as on the street. It’s a tribute to Cook Neilson, Phil Schilling, Reno Carrachi and Giorgio Nepoti, four men all Ducati racing legend’s and personal friends. Desmopro builds absolutely accurate restorations of Italian machines, destined for museums, as well as specialized builds like Café 31 and “Deja Blue” which can be seen in the entrance of the Barber museum in Leeds, AL.

One of the most beautiful racing motorcycles ever made is Ducati's 750SS Corsa.

Carlo Saltarelli has Ducati blood in his veins. He’s a former racer, test rider and dealership owner, and over the years, he’s built up a 100-bike collection of classic Ducatis. In May, this collection goes under the hammer in Monaco. For us, the highlight is this beautiful 1974 750SS Corsa: it’s one of Saltarelli’s own race bikes, and took him to several podium finishes during the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

This machine probably started life as a 750GT and was uprated to competition spec by Reparto Corse Ducati. As you would expect, the components are mouthwatering: twin Dell’Orto PHM 40 mm carburettors, lightweight pistons and competition cams, plus a lightweight clutch and an oil cooler....more
