The more time I spend photographing MotoGP, the more fascinating the riders become. In the past few years I’ve come to believe that, while superior physical differences (their reflexes and fine motor skills) are significant, it’s the mental differences that are the most interesting.
I suppose anyone who has ridden a motorcycle even a bit beyond one’s comfort zone can appreciate some part of the physical aspect of riding a racing bike. For most of us, even the speed of racers in local events is impressive compared to our street riding.
By the time we consider Grand Prix riders, their level of performance is so high that I suspect most of us have very little idea how challenging it is to move a motorcycle around a track that deftly.
While the skills with throttle, brakes, and balance are on a level similar to the best athletes in other sports, I think that what really sets motorcycle racers apart is their ability to overcome fear.

We think this topic, while not Ducati-centric, IS related to our brand, and our sport. Is the difference between a great racer and even the best of the rest, their comfort with fear?

Here are three hi-res desktop wallpapers for fans of the new Ducati 1199 Panigale R! The first, shown above, features Ducati test rider Alessandro Valia HARD on the brakes into CotA’s uphill Turn 1, front suspension compressed, smoke off the rear tire, fully pushing the new Panigale to its limit.
Any time you can get a shooter this good to give you his images for free it's a (Ducati) Red Letter Day.......

In late February, I will meet with Nicky to present a small number of custom prints made from images in the PHOTO.GP archive, each to be signed specifically for that customer. Instead of a generic Nicky Hayden signature, each item in this special group of prints will be signed directly to the buyer, as shown in the example above.
This is a very special opportunity that has been particularly meaningful for those who’ve taken advantage of it. I’ve received some fantastic calls from customers for whom having such a special item on their walls has meant a special connection to a favorite rider.
I suspect it’s the kind of thing you can imagine, but until you have the finished piece before your eyes, knowing that (in this case) Nicky put his hands on it and signed it personally to you, it doesn’t really sink in how special, how unique, that finished piece is.

If any of my loyal fans orders a photo from @ScottJonesPhoto I will personally sign it. Check the link for details bit.ly/NickySigs ✌

As I’ve written before in this space, one of the very best things about my photography adventures has been meeting certain individuals I’d never have come into contact with had I not been so lucky as to find a place in MotoGP. One person high on that list is Marc Garcia, an artist in Barcelona, Spain, who paints helmets and creates trophies, among other things.
In August, 2010, I posted here about the official MotoGP Championship Trophy, which I’d seen for the first time at Silverstone that year. In one of those lucky instances that somehow keep happening, Marc found the post and he got in touch to thank me for recognizing his work. That began an email correspondence which has led to a friendship in which we’ve not yet met face to face.

If you were writing a script for a blockbuster movie based on MotoGP, you would be off to a great start with a premise centered on Tech 3′s current riders: Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso. This current season would be the backstory, perhaps told in flashbacks or in a montage behind the opening titles. Next season is where the drama would unfold in earnest, as each character pursues a World Championship on a different team.
But perhaps there’s too much backstory to fit into the opening credit sequence. In 2012, on nearly identical equipment, they battled for “Best of The Rest” over and over again. Silly season saw each one looking for a chance to move to a factory bike, as each felt a satellite machine was incapable of winning a world title. One rider is courted by Ducati, then abandoned in favor of the other. This leaves one right where he started, but ironically, on a satellite Yamaha that will likely have better results than his rival, who has landed the factory ride both sought.

A Unique Opportunity from PHOTO.GP
PHOTO.GP has come to an agreement with factory Ducati rider Nicky Hayden to do a handful of custom signed images, each one personalized for our most dedicated fans.
At Laguna Seca, Scott will meet with Nicky to present a small number of custom prints made from images in the PHOTO.GP archive, each to be signed specifically for that customer. Instead of a generic Nicky Hayden signature, each item in this special group of prints will be signed directly to the buyer. “For Joe, Nicky Hayden, #69″ for example.
Orders must be finalized soon to allow for the extra logistics involved in bringing this unique opportunity to you. So please inquire now....To see the NH69 Gallery

Having worked directly with Max Biaggi, Casey Stoner, Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi, to name only a few, Federica De Zottis’ experience in Grand Prix motorcycle racing is truly unique. For the past five years she has worked closely with the Ducati Team riders, her current main responsibility on race weekends being to assist with the press duties of Valentino Rossi. When I approached her about the possibility of an interview, she was kind enough to invite me to the Ducati hospitality at Estoril to share her story.

All last season, and for the first three races of 2012, when I’ve walked past the Ducati garage and looked in at Rossi’s side, watching for an interesting moment to photograph, I’ve seen pretty much the same thing: Immensely talented people looking immensely frustrated. I stand there for a moment and think, I’ve already taken this photo, many times. When are things going to change in there?
Things changed this weekend at Le Mans. But after three races in a row, I’d elected to be home for some family events instead of away at the French GP. From the perspective of getting different images of the Ducati box, this was bad timing. But in other ways, and not just family-related, it was good timing indeed, because I watched the race with friends at the San Francisco Dainese Store, which was, as one might expect, full of Rossi fans. And being there was a bit like going back in time....http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/racing/trackside-valentino-rossi-french-gp/

The best of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novels is, in my opinion, his last, the title of which I've borrowed for this piece. In The Long Goodbye, Chandler shows us more of what makes Philip Marlowe tick than in any of the previous novels, and along the way, as observed by my old professor Thomas Steiner, the book itself seems often to be Chandler's personal farewell to Marlowe and to the hardboiled detective novel itself.
This off-season has been a kind of Long Goodbye of my own, in this case not to a genre of fiction or to a fictional character, but to a real one. My main task over the past few months has been to go through my photos from each race weekend I've attended since 2008 and pull out the best images to show on Photo.GP, my online archive. Each time I open a new catalog or revisit one partially processed, I'm confronted with more images of Marco Simoncelli to edit and decide if they belong on Photo.GP or not...more (and more images as well)
