Scientists spot speedy little spider in B.C.'s Flathead Valley

Just three millimetres long, the tiny arachnid has been named after another speedster - the Ducati motorcycle


A tiny B.C. spider that moves so fast it has been named after a sleek Italian motorcycle has been described for the first time.

Apostenus ducati has been found in greatest numbers in high-elevation gravelly slopes in the Flathead Valley of southeastern B.C.

"They are next to impossible to catch," Robb Bennett, a research associate with the Royal B.C. Museum's entomology group, said in an interview Thursday. "They're small and agile and run very quickly. That was the genesis of the name."
