One of big questions heading into this weekend’s MotoGP’s opening round in Qatar - besides who is going to win and if Valentino Rossi, Marc Marquez and even Cal Crutchlow are going to end up in a dog fight for a podium finish - will be if Ducati has actually managed to cut the gap with Honda and Yamaha.
During the last pre-season test at Jerez, three Ducati riders, Andrea Dovizioso, Andrea Iannone and Nicky Hayden saw significant improvements in lap times using modified versions of last year’s Desmosedici - but Jerez is also Ducati’s test track - so it will be interesting to see if the partial solutions they found at the Spanish circuit will work at Losail and if track temperatures will affect the Ducati regarding tire wear which Andrea Dovizioso believes could be an issue since he has not done a race simulation during the pre-season tests.

Nicky Hayden emerged on top of a four-rider fight for sixth place to be the leading Ducati competitor during Sunday's season-opening Qatar MotoGP night race. Hayden, Hector Barbera, Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista swapped places repeatedly during the closing stages, with Hayden crossing the line just a fraction ahead of Bautista's Gresini Honda. Hayden, the 2006 world champion, was 28 seconds from victory, but felt he had the potential to bridge the eleven seconds gap to Monster Yamaha tech 3 riders Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso. “I felt we had the potential to run with Dovizioso and Crutchlow, but considering my injuries and limited testing over the winter, I guess sixth is pretty good,” said Hayden. Ryder Notes: Becoming Clearer by julian ryder on the ground in the desert Sunday, April 08, 2012 The mist is clearing just a little, and a few things are now clear. First, as we suspected after Winter testing, Yamaha have got it right. The motorbike isn't fastest through the speedtrap but it is the best package out there. All four Yamaha riders are happy: Jorge's on pole, Cal's on the front row for the first time, Ben probably would have been but for a second crash, and Dovi is happy. Why wouldn't he be? Looks like he got off last year's best bike and on to this year's? The factory Hondas are both afflicted by debilitating chatter. Casey Stoner is sure it is due to the way the electronics are working and is already showing signs of impatience with the team, he obviously thinks they aren't listening to him. Mind you, he is also showing signs of impatience with the CRT bikes, the new for 2012 front brake lever guards, and most other things that come within range. However, Casey's problem is likely to reduce as the tyre wears so we may be back to last year where his idea of a bad day at the office is third place....more here: http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2012/Apr/120408a.htm

Nicky Hayden takes part in the MotoGP 2012 Qatar Free Practice...
The Losail International Circuit hosts the 2012 MotoGP World Championship season opener, the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar.

The season-opening MotoGP race saw Ducati Team riders Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden finish in seventh and eighth places, respectively, under the floodlights at Losail International Circuit.
Italian Andrea Dovizioso threatened to pull of the first major shock of the 2013 MotoGP world championship in Qatar last night when he battled for a top three position in free practice. The former 125GP world champion put his factory Desmosedici GP13 into the top three in the late stages of last night’s third practice session, which saw the top 10 automatically entered into tonight’s second 15-minute qualifying session.
American Ben Spies improved by over a second on Friday but admits that he's a bit behind the curve due to his injured shoulder.

We are in the middle of a desert, but it's nothing like the soft dunes of the old Dakar rally; here there is only rocks, sand and huge lighting towers to illuminate a track in the middle of nowhere. On the first day of school, Fenati and Iannone were the teachers pets, each just barely missing out on an A+, but they will have 17 more chances to hit the mark. The MotoGP race was all about Stoner and Lorenzo, but the Australian failed physical eduction. The CRT riders gave their best, but they might need to be held back for a year. Valentino Rossi played the class clown, and as the lights were being switched off at Qatar, the spotlight was left shining on his relationship with Ducati. But at least it wasn't boring. Ducati Post Race Press Release | MotoGP 2012 - 01 - Qatar GP
MotoGP 2012 - 01 - Qatar GP Hayden sixth in Qatar Grand Prix, Rossi tenth At the opening round of the MotoGP season, the Ducati Team earned a sixth-place finish with Nicky Hayden and tenth place with Valentino Rossi. The American didn’t get a great start, but his performance improved steadily as the laps ticked down, and he came out on top of a hard-fought battle with Alvaro Bautista, Stefan Bradl and Hector Barbera to finish in sixth place. Having started from the twelfth spot on the grid after a difficult qualifying session, Valentino Rossi dealt with a number of problems but worked hard the entire race, eventually turning decent lap times. The racing department in Bologna and the Ducati Team engineers will continue to develop the GP12 in an effort to make progress for the next Grand Prix, which will take place in Jerez, Spain, on April 27-29. Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 6th “I felt we had the potential to run with Dovizioso and Crutchlow, but considering my injuries and limited testing over the winter, I guess sixth is pretty good. I lost some positions at the beginning because I got hung up behind Spies and wasn’t very good on the brakes, but as the race went on, I managed my tyre well and got stronger. That group I was in was fighting hard, and I was happy to bring Bradl back and come out on top of that battle. We put some good points on the board, got some data and learned a lot from riding with other people. I’m excited for the season. I think if we improve some things, we have the potential to put up some good results. I’d like to thank the team, the sponsors and everybody back at Ducati for all their work, because we’ve clearly taken a step forward since last year.” Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 10th “Unfortunately, I lost a lot of time in the beginning because when I had new tyres with good grip, the rear pushed a lot, making it very difficult under braking. Then Barbera pushed me off the track and I lost five or six seconds. Otherwise, I could have stayed with that group. As the tyre became used and began to slide, I started to ride a bit better and to do better times, to the point that I matched my best time on the last lap. By that point though, it didn’t count for much.” Vittoriano Guareschi (Team Manager) “It was a challenging weekend for our team, but we can also look at some positive aspects as we continue to focus on working with the still-young GP12. Valentino had a difficult qualifying session, and he had problems in the race, particularly in the early laps with fresh tyres. We must learn how to solve this, because in the end he posted some good times. Nicky felt more comfortable during practice, and today he rode with great determination, scrapping with Bautista, Bradl and Barbera to win the hard fight for sixth place. We’ll compare the data and the information we gathered from both riders in order to improve our bike for Jerez.”
A downbeat Valentino Rossi conceded that at present he simply cannot get to grips with the 2012 Ducati after struggling to 10th place in the Qatar Grand Prix. The seven-time MotoGP champion was a long way off the pace throughout the Losail weekend, and could not match team-mate Nicky Hayden's pace. While Rossi said an earlier clash with Hector Barbera was a factor in his Qatar result, he admitted that the biggest problem was that the bike did not suit him at all....more here: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/98678
Intensity, thy name is Valentino...
The Desmosedici GP12 will start its debut Grand Prix on the second row tomorrow evening, with Ducati Team rider Nicky Hayden having posted a top-five time in tonight’s (Saturday) qualifying session at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit. Team-mate Valentino Rossi, after a trio of progressively improving free-practice sessions, encountered set-up problems that prevented him from doing better than twelfth place. While Nicky Hayden immediately felt at home with his bike’s set-up and was able to log consistently good lap times even with the hard tyre, Valentino Rossi had a much different experience and didn’t find the same feeling that had enabled him to post better times on Friday. Nicky Hayden: "Our goal tonight was to be in the top five, and I’m pleased that we achieved that. I did a 56.1 on a hard tyre and to be honest, I thought maybe I could do something really special with the soft, but all things considered, I think we did decently in our first qualifying session....More here: http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2012/ducati+review+qatar+qp
(translated by Google) There is a subtle irony in the standings after the third free practice session for the Losail International Circuit, Ducati are three in a row, from 6 to 8th place, but the positions are reversed . In front of the pilot not titrated with a Ducati abandoned after the first test in Valencia at the end of last season, behind the tip with the latest evolution of the D16, in the midst of his faithful squire. Barbera, Hayden, Rossi shows the list of the times, in more than a nuisance on the road to the summit for Valentino. " We will see which positions will be Sunday evening, finished the race "raises the Doctor. But now I'm in front. " We are all three very close, Nicky is riding well, Hector has done in the wake of that time, however, was good . " It was not possible to do more? " We put the soft rubber at the end of the round and we could not get the most . " With the tough but what is the situation? " Much better, mainly because I could always turn on a steady pace , even after 22 or 23 laps on the same tire . " Where was the most important step? " The front, is much more sincere than last year and allows me to draw lines that you want . " But there is still work. " We must remain calm and focused. The understeer is the biggest problem . " For tomorrow, what is your goal? " The second row , we can do it. Then improve on the pitch, two or three tenths there would be enough to manage to do the race with a group of riders ahead of us .
