Ducati, Monza: alarm for bike and driver

Ducati, Monza: alarm for bike and driver | Ductalk | Scoop.it

It is not an easy year, speaking about sport, for Ducati. In addition to the developing difficulties of MotoGp project, significant problems occurred in the SBK area (historically a land of conquest for Borgo Panigale's Production House).

After the initial enthusiasm with the clinched Superpole in Phillip Island, the 1199 Panigale has always struggled in race. Neither the effort of Carlos Checa were useful enough, never on the podium and twelftht in the general ranking with 29 points, nor those of a skilled team like the Alstar one. General manager Berhnard Gobmeiertried to explain the problem of the last emilian superbike.

CHECA AND GIUGLIANO (ALTHEA RACING) CONCLUDE AN OFFICIAL ONE DAY TEST AT THE MOTORLAND ARAGON CIRCUIT

CHECA AND GIUGLIANO (ALTHEA RACING) CONCLUDE AN OFFICIAL ONE DAY TEST AT THE MOTORLAND ARAGON CIRCUIT | Ductalk | Scoop.it

CHECA AND GIUGLIANO (ALTHEA RACING) CONCLUDE AN OFFICIAL ONE DAY TEST AT THE MOTORLAND ARAGON CIRCUIT
Aragon (Spain), Monday 2nd July: the Althea Racing team and its riders Carlos Checa and Davide Giugliano took part in today’s official Infront Motor Sports test session at the MotorLand Aragon circuit, the same track at which they raced just yesterday.
Pirelli, official tyre supplier for the World Superbike championship, brought new 17 inch tyres to the Spanish track for almost all of the Superbike teams to test today. This new tyre will be introduced into the championship from the start of 2013; it is of the same measurement as tyres mounted on production series sports bikes. Both Carlos and Davide lapped with the new tyres and their feedback was very positive.
Carlos Checa:
“I really liked the new tyre and I’d say it’s almost at the level of the 16.5. It is very stable, corners well and has almost all of the positive attributes of the 16.5 inch. In terms of performance it seems very good, also because we didn’t change the bike setting but it nevertheless performed well. We have seen a slight improvement with regard to the front, but probably this is a combination of the two, which together provide good balance.”
Davide Giugliano:
“Today we worked well and were pretty productive. I must say that I really like the 17 inch tyre. During today’s sessions I was able to find good sensation, especially at the front which allowed me to improve on my best time set yesterday. I’m happy; it’s been a positive day as far as I’m concerned.”

Checa: Top five would feel like a win! | Crash.Net | Ductalk | Scoop.it
WSBK News. Carlos Checa casts a pessimistic figure heading into the fourth round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship at Monza, the champion admitting he will struggle to make the top five.

Carlos Checa concedes he isn't even expecting to crack the top five during the fourth round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship as the series reaches the high-speed layout of Monza.

The reigning champion has made frequent reference to the circuit being his and Ducati's nadir, the twin-cylinder machine having struggled for outright speed over the long straights of the Italian circuit in 2011....more on the headline link above

Checa takes rap for erroneous tyre choice | Crash.Net | Ductalk | Scoop.it
WSBK News.Carlos Checa says it is his fault he started the second race at Assen on full wet tyres despite the drying conditions.

Carlos Checa says he is to blame for the decision to start the second World Superbike race of the day of full wet tyres, an error that left him outside the points and places him behind Max Biaggi in the overall standings.

An eventful day for the reigning champion, Checa went into the opening race looking to extend his advantage in the overall standings and duly found himself embroiled in an intense battle for the lead of the race with several other riders....more on the headline link above

25 Years of World Superbike: medals for Italian duo | WorldSBK.com

25 Years of World Superbike: medals for Italian duo | WorldSBK.com | Ductalk | Scoop.it
As part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Superbike World Championship, two Italian legends of the category, Pierfrancesco Chili and Piergiorgio Bontempi, were welcomed into the SBK Hall of Fame at Imola. The ceremony took place in parc fermé on Sunday just before the start of race 2, when both riders received medals from Paolo Flammini (CEO Infront Motor Sports).

Bologna man Pierfrancesco Chili, aka ‘Frankie', raced in World Superbike for a total of 12 years, producing some of the championship's most memorable moments and rapidly becoming a true favourite of the public as well as quite a heartthrob for the female fans. With 276 races to his name (third in the all-time list), including 17 wins and 61 podiums, Chili was a perfect incarnation of the Superbike spirit between 1995 and 2006, racing mainly with Ducati and Suzuki, but also Honda in his final two seasons. Twice classified fourth in the overall standings (in 1998 with Virginio Ferrari's Ducati ADVF team and in 2000 with Suzuki Alstare), Chili still ties with Max Biaggi on 17 wins as the most successful Italian rider in World Superbike. Four of those wins came at Monza, one of his preferred tracks, and the last one was race 2 at Misano in 2004 at the end of a spectacular recovery on his PSG-1 Ducati 998R.

Checa: Another incredible day! | Crash.Net | Ductalk | Scoop.it
WSBK News.An emotional Carlos Checa returns to the head of the World Superbike Championship standings as he dominates race day at Imola.

Carlos Checa has assumed his familiar place at the top of the World Superbike Championship standings after a comprehensive double victory during the second round of the season at Imola.

Having won three of the last four races to be held around the Italian circuit, Checa was always expected to be a threat for victory on a circuit that has traditionally suited the Ducati twin.

Indeed, though Checa was happy to allow Tom Sykes to make the early running on both occasions, the Spaniard would eventually pounce as the race entered its second-half before easing out as the comfortable winner....more

Brett McCormick promoted to WSBK? | Crash.Net | Ductalk | Scoop.it
WSBK News.Brett McCormick is tipped to make his World Superbike debut at Imola as Effenbert Liberty Ducati looks set to expand to four bikes for 2012.

Effenbert Liberty Ducati is reportedly on the verge of confirming an expansion to four bikes for the remainder of the 2012 World Superbike Championship, with Brett McCormick set to assume the available ride.

The team, which is currently embarking on its second season of WSBK racing, has already expanded its efforts for 2012, with Maxime Berger joining Sylvain Guintoli and Jakub Smrz in the Superbike class, while McCormick and Federico Sandi were originally signed to lead Effenbert Liberty's maiden foray into the FIM Superstock 1000 series aboard the new Ducati 1199 Panigale.

However, according to GPOne.com, McCormick will actually make his WSBK debut next time out at Imola aboard the Ducati 1098R Superbike, a machine he tested during the Portimao post-season tests in 2011.

McCormick's promotion would bring the number of full-time WSBK entrants to 25 and would make him the first Canadian to race in the series since Miguel Dumahel in 1997....more

Cycle News | A Q&A With Carlos Checa | Miller Motorsports Park

Interview with Carlos Checa...

Miller Motorsports Park will again host the USA Round of the FIM Superbike World Championship on Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28. As was the case last year, we will visit with race winners and other notable riders participating in the championship after each race during the 2012 season leading up to the series' return to Utah and bring you a new chapter in the "Five Questions with" series. We will solicit questions from leading motorcycle racing journalists and, starting with the next installment, from our fans via Facebook.

Our first subject for this season is Spain's Carlos Checa, the reigning Superbike World Champion, who rides the No. 7 Althea Ducati 1098R. Checa, known affectionately throughout the paddock as "El Matador," could also justifiably be nicknamed "Mr. Miller." He swept both races at Miller Motorsports Park last year and in the series' inaugural visit to Miller Motorsports Park in 2008. He would have repeated the feat in 2010 but for mechanical trouble that sidelined him while leading both races. He won the second of two races in the first round of the 2012 season on February 27 at Australia's Phillip Island circuit, and looks poised to contend for a second consecutive championship this year.

Now that you've won the Superbike World Championship, what is the source of your motivation for the 2012 season? (David Swarts, Roadracing World)...more

SPEED Still without TV Contracts for WSBK & MotoGP??!

SPEED Still without TV Contracts for WSBK & MotoGP??! | Ductalk | Scoop.it

With the World Superbike season-opener now less than two weeks away, bad news looms for motorcycle race fans in the United States, as the SPEED Channel (now a part of FOX Sports), does not have a television contract to air WSBK and MotoGP for their 2013 seasons.

An issue that has been hanging in limbo since the start of the year, Superbike Planet yesterday suggested that American motorcycle racing fans could be without the World Superbike Championship on their televisions sets this year (we have heard similar murmurings regarding AMA Pro Racing as well).

Checa confident of Italian success on Ducati | Crash.Net | Ductalk | Scoop.it

'I'm feeling confident, because it's a good track for the Ducati and also a track that I really like. I have some great memories of last year's event' - Carlos Checa

Reigning World Superbike Champion Carlos Checa is feeling 'confident' of his chances at Imola in Italy this weekend as he aims to build on his race two victory at the opening round.

The Althea Ducati rider experienced the highs and lows of motorcycle racing at Phillip Island in Australia when he spectacularly high-sided out of the first race while holding the lead from Aprilia's Max Biaggi.

By contrast, Checa bounced back to triumph in the second race while Biaggi was hampered by bad luck after running off the track at the beginning of the race and dropped to last place....more

25 Years of World Superbike: Pierfrancesco Chili | Worldsbk.com | Ductalk | Scoop.it
The original fast rider who looked at SBK racing as the ideal way to prolong his career, Pierfrancesco Chili is one of the true legends of the class. Perennially youthful, even though he is 47-years old at present, Chili was the granddad of the class for some time, and raced right up until 2006. He finished inside the top four in both 1998 and 2000 seasons - first on a Ducati twin and then a 750cc Suzuki four-cylinder.

He took 17 wins in all, 29 fastest laps and ten pole positions - from his first involvement in 1995 to his last race, at Magny-Cours, his 276th career start. He scored a remarkable 61 podiums - sharing seventh place in the overall rankings with two others at this time. Few riders have ever come close to him for having a universal fan base. ‘Frankie' as he was known to one and all, has always been box-office, win, crash or draw.

When asked about why he has so many fans all over the world, Chili states, "I think it is because I was like a normal person. And when I won it was for all the people, not only for myself or my team. I think people like me because I gave back to people some good emotions. Sometimes I pushed a little bit too much and fell down, but that was my style - I did not make so much calculation in my races. I wanted to just win!"...more

The three-time champion couldn't quite make it on to the grid for 2012...

Canadian European Superstock 1000 racer Brett McCormick has been promoted to the Effenbert Ducati WSBK squad for the rest of the season after a deal for the team to run Troy Bayliss at selected rounds this year fell through.

Team owner Mario Bertuccio had wanted the three-time world champion to field a fourth 1198 on a couple of occasions but for reasons unknown, the deal couldn't be secured so McCormick steps up to join Sylvain Guintoli, Jakub Smrz and Maxime Berger.

”The Effenbert company believes in motorsport and its use as the most powerful promotional engine so much that it was in their contemplation to run a Liberty Racing bike with legendary Troy Bayliss on a couple of occasions this season. They had a strong desire to give him the opportunity to ride as a wild card in a few races," said Bertuccio....more
