Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone will be heading to the US a few days early, but he won’t be going directly to the Circuit of the Americas in Texas for next week’s second MotoGP round, instead he’ll spend two days at the Mazda Speedway in Laguna Seca learning the spectacular and difficult California track. When I arrived at Sydney's impressive Ducati dealership to ride the new Panigale S superbike, there was a long line of freshly-traded 1098 models inside. I had to concede that these superseded bikes looked absolutely stunning, and quite why anyone would want to turf them out of their garage was completely lost on me. With their trellis frames and underseat exhausts, they had the signature features that have defined Ducati's sportsbikes ever since the Tamburini-penned 916 set the design agenda for the breed 20 years ago. Dressed in red and looking every bit as dangerous as an Eastern block hooker in a Marbella nightclub, this two wheeled diva beckoned me from the forecourt with a wink and a flash of her sleek bodywork....

European Editor Bruno dePrato visits the Bologna factory to watch an 1199 Power Twin come to life! Ducati allowed me to walk the production line of the 1199 Panigale, arguably the most advanced V-Twin in production today. The assembly line is that of the Desmosedici V-Four, completely refurbished and retooled. If it weren’t for the scent of special sealants and lubricants, the place would pass for a surgical operating theater. When I stepped into it, my mind went back to when I was working at Ducati....
Vicki Smith for Ducati.net's insight:
Lots of great photos - quite a contrast to the vintage assembly line video we posted HERE last week. It's a pretty big deal to take photos on the Ducati factory floor so when you see something like this it's something special Delete the scoop?

Unbelievable performance and technological excellence proclaim this the new queen of the Superbike family. Born of the world of competitive racing, the 1199 Panigale R is an exclusive and treasured interpretation of man's passion for the racetrack: titanium piston rods, carbon fibre bodywork, Ducati Performance racing exhaust and livery inspired by the Ducati Corse. Perfection was never so close. For the video click HERE Delete the scoop?

I’d always dreamed of going on a long motorcycle trip without an end-date. Looking back I see I had more than a few opportunities to make it happen, but prudence and responsibility always interfered: college, work, a mortgage, the cable guy coming on the 16th. But everyone eventually hits a moment in their life when the reckless ambitions of their youth begin to turn into adulthood regrets. And when that moment finally came for me, I said, “fuck it”, bought a 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale S, threw some gear into a backpack, hit the starter button and roared out of Los Angeles. My only plan was to get to the Atlantic prior to turning around.... Delete the scoop?

Depending on who you talk to, a Ferrari F1 car produces north of 700 hp and weighs 1,411 pounds for a 2:1 or better power-to-weight ratio. By contrast, the Ducati 1199 Panigale S delivers 195 hp and weighs 415 pounds for a comparable 2.1:1 ratio. So, if you want to argue that Ducati's all-new flagship delivers F1 performance for the street, you'd be right.
