When Ducati unveiled the Diavel in 2011, the model was essentially an assault weapon with one target in its crosshairs - the power-cruiser market.

This was new territory for the Bologna-based manufacturer, and the Diavel quickly gained recognition, bringing Ducati's underlying image of performance to a new audience.

The model's assault apparently worked, Ducati claiming that the Diavel, which is local Borgo Panigale dialect for "devil," pronounced dee-ah-vel, is now one of the company's most desired models.

Not too worried about changing the Diavel's design, the model returned as a carryover in 2012, though with addition of special editions, such as the Cromo and AMG (before the Audi takeover).

Chris Pine is in the process of rebooting his second high-profile character for Paramount Pictures, and 2013 is most likely the year he becomes a household name. We’ll see him reprise the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek 2‘ in May, while next winter brings us Pine take on Jack Ryan in, well, ‘ Jack Ryan.’ If you were wondering what the latter character will look like, today’s your lucky day, as the first image of Pine-as-Ryan has been revealed.

As you can see from said image (via ComingSoon.net), production has officially begun on ‘Jack Ryan,’ which will tell the origin story of the fictional CIA operative. Not a whole lot to take away from this picture, other than shooting is taking place in Manhattan (South Street Seaport, it appears) and Jack has expensive taste in motorcycles – that’s a Ducati, baby....

The Diavel definitely stretches the definition of “cruiser.” Luckily, it stretches it in the preferred direction, with a wickedly fast
 yet perfectly tractable “11-degree” Testastretta Ducati V-Twin housed in a chassis that nicely splits the difference between laid-back and poised-for-action, and that doesn’t bow and scrape for mercy at the first sign of Earth curvature. This one’s bipolar: You can cruise or you can cruise; the Diavel is there for you either way. It’s so fresh that we’re only worried it might be a long time before any new cruiser steps up to depose it. A definite shock to the system that the system needed. For the second year in a row.

If you can’t ride a motor, it’s difficult to describe the sensation of riding the 2012 Ducati Diavel Cromo. Still, that’s my job, so I’ll give it a try.

If you’ve never sat astride any crotch rocket – especially a seasoned Italian dish like the Cromo – imagine riding a horse that will run you through the sidewall of a barn if you spur it too hard. Imagine taking a bicycle down a ski jump. Imagine rollerblades – rocket-packed like the model Wile E. Coyote orders from Acme.

And then imagine any of those created with enough engineering and technology to make such speed not only safe, but entirely manageable and enjoyable by the rider.

There. That should do it.

We tackle the roads around Nor-Cals majestic Mt. Shasta on the 2012 Ducati Diavel Carbon as we test the merits of Ducatis cruiser as a tourer.

Mt. Shasta shoots up above the Northern California landscape, its 14,000 foot peak still capped by snow though it’s summer. Sturdy pines creep halfway up its face before the tree-line yields to glacier-carved canyons. The mountain has served as the fodder of lore, from tales of a lost underground civilization called Lemuria to New Age stories of
Mt. Shasta looms in the distance, a 14,179 stratovolcano in Northern California. Sounds like a great place to test the road handling capabilities of the Ducati Diavel Carbon. “harmonic convergence.” Though it’s dormant now, the stratovolcano in the Pacific Ring of Fire rages to life every 700 years or so, rewriting the history of the landscape.

Friday night’s track activity at World Ducati Week 2012 in Misano, Italy saw the incredible Drag Race by Tudor thrill the crowd as Ducati riders from the GP and World Superbike Championships battled onboard Ducati Diavels. MotoGP vs World Superbike but an ex-racer was the one who showed them all.

Character? How about Bat-man? The $19,995 Ducati Diavel Carbon’s a big pussycat of a motorcycle, but if you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t think so. I especially enjoy riding it around CW’s new home here in the master-planned (master-bland?) community of Irvine. It really must be a nice place to live, if you like nice.
There’s not a blade of grass out of place, but the truly nice thing about Irvine is there’s nary a pothole or even a rough stretch of pavement to be found, and many of its wide, smooth parkways are laid out in big curves and circles to break up the monotony and (we conjecture) thwart bank robberies. (It’s working: Wikipedia says the FBI reported in 2010 that Irvine had the lowest violent crime rate among cities in the U.S. with population of more than 100,000.)...More here

2012 Ducati Diavel in India first ride..

Dieval. That's what the Italians wanted to name it. Except everyone outside Italy would pronounce it as Die-well. It's definitely a beauty that you'd die for but not quite the name you would want for a motorcycle. So the spelling was changed to Diavel (pronounced Dee-ah-vel). Technically that's how dieval' is pronounced in Italy too.

So much for etymology. Okay one more trivia. Diavel in the local Bolognese dialect means devil. One look at the motorcycle and you know why it's called that. Ducati have thrown conformity out of the window when it comes to the design. They took the best ingredients from a superbike, a naked bike, a cruiser, even an American hot rod and produced a mean sizzler. To put a twist on it, if Batman had to trade in his batpod for a motorcycle, he would buy the Diavel.

Touring aboard the Ducati Diavel

As ideas go, I thought it was one of the more interesting propositions I have had in a while. What if you take an unusual new motorcycle and try and stretch the envelope of its design parameters on a ride the bike is not really designed for? What would you get? An interesting story? A riding challenge and new experience? All three?

That's how I found myself hurtling down Mt. Pinos Road in the Los Padres National Forest outside Frazier Park, Calif. on an all-carbon, Testastretta-motored Ducati Diavel power cruiser, complete with saddlebags and tailbag, on a three-day jaunt with friends to the 2011 Laguna Seca MotoGP.

Always the star of WDW, as always the races take a back seat to the stunting at the finish. As always the hardest working man in motorsports went the extra mile (more like the extra 10 minutes) and wow'd the crowd. When was the last time (or ever) you heard the whole crowd chanting NICKY,NICKY,NICKY, when Vale was in the house? Well, if you had been there you would have been screaming it too.
