Valentino Rossi ended his more than two year victory drought with a win on his home soil.
That it didn't come in a MotoGP race was of little consequence to the nine-time world champion. Having endured two years of misery on the Ducati Marlboro team, Rossi was happy to not only be competitive, but competitive enough to win.
Driving a Monster Energy-backed Ford Fiesta WRC, Rossi won the Monza Rally Show for the third time, beating not only Yamaha's recently crowned MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo-he was 10th in his rally debut-but also multi-time Le Mans 24 Hour winner Dindo Capello, who Rossi battled over the course of the three-day event.

Valentino Rossi put a scare into the reigning World Rally Champion with a strong second place finish in the Monza Rally Show at the Monza Autodrome outside of Milan, Italy.
The nine-time world champion and co-driver Carlo Cassina drove their Monster Energy Ford Fiesta RS to two stage wins and second place overall in the WRC class behind eight-time and defending World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb and co-driver Severine Loeb after three days of racing on a variety of courses at the Monza circuit.
"Beating his majesty Sebastien Loeb in the Rally of Monza Grand Prix is a cool thing... to do it two times it is priceless!" Rossi wrote on Twitter....

Rossi: "The end of a disastrous 2011
We have to improve, like Inter"
Milano, 25 November 2011
Valentino is one of the protagonists of the Monza Rally Show: "It's a nice way to end the worst year of my career. A present from Father Christmas? A competitive GP 2012."
Valentino Rossi was smiling and relaxed – a rarity this year – as he climbed into his Ford Fiesta WRC for the 2011 Monza Rally Show, the traditional end-of-season event at the Monza autodrome. Shed of the tension in MotoGP, free of worries about the 2012 tests. Here, where Vale has already won twice, his faithful sidekicks Uccio and Davide Brivio are also in the race, each with a co-driver and each bearing the number 46. Protective, of course, but not too much because today Doctor Rossi is enjoying himself. "It's a nice way to end the year," he grinned. "It's probably been, actually it's definitely been, the worst season of my career. What would I like Father Christmas to bring me? A competitive GP 2012."
LIKE INTER — "We have a very different bike," Rossi continued. "I'd like to see the progress as early as February. Hopefully we'll be faster and more competitive. It's right that there are no longer any limits on tests and that helps us." In the meantime there's a Rally to be raced and a special head-to-head with Sébastien Loeb. "He has won 8 World Championships in a row, what more can you say? For me just racing with him is an honour and a fun way to end a year that has been disastrous overall." So the recipe is to start over from scratch, a bit like Rossi's favourite team, Inter, where there have been constant managerial changes: "I'm pleased they're through in the Champions League, but the group wasn't difficult. I have to say they haven't been playing well recently; if they want to compete with AC Milan they'll have to step up a level."
ON THE TRACK FOR SIC — It was a particular edition of the rally show; the first without Marco Simoncelli, who right here in 2010 made sure he didn’t miss out on anything with a crash and a fire at the Master Show final. Valentino concluded: "Yes, we were the ones who got him started. I still remember when my father Graziano had him try with his first cars. And he was fast in them, too." Everyone is saying, “Sic isn’t here, yet he is." And there are lots of “Ciao Sic” stickers to be seen on the cars, along with his number 58 Honda on display in the centre of the paddock. Next to the bike, a panel will display the greetings from the fans that will pass from the autodrome until Sunday. Furthermore, the Master Show – the most spectacular race at the Monza Rally Show – will be dedicated to Simoncelli and will be held on Sunday at 13:30.
WOMEN, CARS AND VIPS — If you're looking for competition, you won't be disappointed. Starting the Monza Rally 2011 will be the winners of 8 World Rally Championships, 5 European Championships, 1 IRC title, 11 Italian Championships, 10 MotoGP World Championships and 3 24 Hours of Le Mans. Top-class stars such as Sébastien Loeb and Valentino Rossi, Dindo Capello and Dani Sordo, plus the debutant Andrea Dovizioso and Moto 2 riders Andrea Iannone and Claudio Corti. There are plenty of VIPs on board too: singer Cesare Cremonini, TV personality Capitan Ventosa, former cyclist Claudio Chiappucci, the regional councillor for Lombardy Nicole Minetti and TV presenter Sara Ventura. And for the first time in Italy, there will also be Max Papis in his NASCAR car.

We’ve already mentioned that this upcoming weekend’s Monza Rally Show will be dedicated to late Marco Simoncelli and friend Valentino Rossi will also be taking part as he usually does every year (last year he missed it, as he was recovering from shoulder surgery).
Since Rossi has taken to Twitter like a duck to water, he posted the pics of the Ford Fiesta WRC car he’ll be racing with. The graphic design is pimped by Aldo Drudi and has Rossi’s trademark sun and moon motif and the usual array of bright colours that distinguish his helmet’s and also has a large tribute to friend Marco Simoncelli.
Also taking part in the rally show will be Andrea Dovizioso, Moto2 riders Andrea Iannone and Claudio Corti.
